'Dead Taliban prisoner not American'

ISLAMABAD: The body of a foreigner who died while in Taliban custody in Afghanistan was not that of an American citizen, as claimed by the Islamic Militia, the US embassy in Pakistan said Tuesday.

"We've determined that the individual involved is not an American," an embassy spokesperson said.

"I think we know who the individual is, and we've determined that he is probably a Pakistani national," the spokesperson said.

The Taliban said on Sunday that an American citizen arrested in Afghanistan 10 days before had died in hospital in the militia's southern stronghold of Kandahar.

They also said the body had been handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
