What?!!?

Ok, let me set this straight.

SGI did spun off MIPS some times ago, but have retain the team that design the high end (non-embedded) MIPS microprocessor inside SGI (including myself). Although I'm cannot speak for the company, I currently see that SGI is very committed to MIPS based systems. SGI is continue to invest in development of MIPS based microprocessors and systems. If you check out jobs under www.sgi.com, you'll find that the cpu team is continue to hire.

As far as using outside cpus are concern, SGI have use MIPS cpu that were design by other company before on its IRIX workstation, R4600 and R5000 are examples but there are all MIPS compatiable chips and in all cases in the low end of the market.

On the parallel, SGI is developing/selling system based on Intel's Itanium/Linux. However, the revenue from that is currently mininial. Will it take off? Who knows.
