ADB aid to Pakistan gets major boost
atimes.com
ISLAMABAD - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has increased development assistance to Pakistan to US$950 million for the year ending December 31. "It is a substantial rise from the $626 million planned before the events of September 11," said ADB president Tadao Chino.

The ADB package, and packages from other multilateral agencies, were on the cards before the events of September 11, but Pakistan is being awarded extra funds by the international community not only because of its support in the United States-led war on terrorism, but because the Afghan situation has severely battered Pakistan's economy.

The government officially projected war costs at $2.5 billion, with the growing burden of refugees to cost another $500 million.

"The recent and ongoing events in the region have greatly worsened the economic situation in Pakistan. In view of the added difficulties, I assured the government of Pakistan that we would do whatever we can to help," Chino said.
