nmethylated DNA could provide a defence
US scientists may have developed a way to help
humans fight off dangerous bacteria by supercharging
their immune systems.

Their discovery, which has so far only been tested on
animals, could provide temporary protection from a
range of bio-weapons including anthrax, Ebola and
listeria.

It could also provide a defence for travellers exposed to
endemic diseases abroad, such as malaria, and for
patients undergoing surgery who are at risk of
post-operative infections.

The technique involves introducing chemicals called
"unmethylated CpGs" to the human immune system.

CpGs are elements of DNA made up of cytosine and
guanine - two of the four components which help form
the genetic code of DNA.

The key difference is that in humans this particular DNA
sequence has undergone a chemical modification,
called methylation, whereas in bacteria it has not.

This allows the body to distinguish between bacteria and
human cells.
