UMC (2303) may post NT$5.0bn sales in October, up 20% mom, according to the “Economic Daily.” On the other hand, the “Commercial Times” indicated NT$4.5bn sales for UMC. Whether its NT$5.0bn or NT$4.5bn, UMC's October results are better than expected.

Broadcom (BRCM US) is reported to have put 25% more orders to TSMC (2330 TT) in 4Q01 sequentially, according to the “Commercial Times.” In the US stock market we've also observed that ADI (ADI US), one of TSMC's major clients, has been outperforming so far during 4Q01, indicating that the communication industry may begin to put more orders to Taiwan IC foundries.

DRAM shares outperformed on stable spot prices: The price for 64 MB DRAMs remained flat yesterday, while 128 MB DRAM prices edged up 0.43%. Winbond (2344 TT), which was the No. 2 net buy by foreign investors yesterday (25mn shares), will hold an analyst meeting this afternoon to outline its outlook on the DRAM industry and to introduce investors to its plans to overhaul its operations from commodity to mobile DRAM over the next 3 years. Winbond (2344 TT), Mosel (2342 TT), Nanya Tech. (2408 TT), Powerchip (5346 TT), and ProMos (5387 TT) all closed 7% limit-up. Investors still had unfilled buy orders for 38.3 mn shares of Winbond as the market closed.
