These would largely be disaffected intellectuals or frustrated power-seekers in the ROW, right? The large majority of those populations have more immediate, less ambitious concerns, and their relative lack of personal sophistication in geo-political matters leaves them easily swayed and influenced by anyone with simple answers, a forum of some sort, and a congruent presentation. A minority willing to exploit a less informed and less thoughtful majority, in other words, for their own less than altruistic purposes. This is a dynamic that is always going to be with us, no matter what. Somebody will always be on the outside looking in.

America as the Great Satan is a metaphor in hands of those who seek to use it as such that will remain largely unaffected by whatever we do or however we act in the ROW.
