Good post; but I would like to make another point.. As Hammer goes from 32 to 64 bits; a lot of people will expect that the IPC will also improve. They will say say, Of course this chip does more per clock, it is 64 bits, rather than 32. Which will fit in nicely into the fact that the Hammer could have almost 60% improvement in IPC over P4. So when AMD says that a 2 ghz Hammer will = a 3 ghz P4, people will yes, that makes sense, Hammer can process 64 bits per clock, instead of 32, so that is the reason Hammer is so much faster. People will equate higher performance to the 64 bit part and expect more performance; and as a consequence, will compare the higher ghz P4 against higher IPC Hammer, and say, Hammer doubles the processing power, but P4 only has 30% more speed, so therefore, Hammer is a better buy. In other words, I fully expect that AMDs Quantispeed rating, or TPI will be more believeable, once Hammer appears. |
