Consider the source - an official with Bell Atlantic! I am aware that the upstream is the weakest link. Hey, there always has to be a weakest link. I can only say that I've never had any problem with interference. The claim that "you are sharing the bandwidth with everybody" is patently false. The system is split into segmenets, each with it's own dedicated bandwidth. If you do the math, you can see that today's systems offer impressive bandwidth, even at peak loads.
