"AMD is not positioning Hypertransport as a standard, but rather as a licensable protocol that offers high bandwidths at low pin counts."

Semantics. There are many cases when a standard has started out as a proprietary protocol and then has become a de facto standard. Considering that in most cases, if not all, HT is licensed for no fee and no royalty, it stands a good chance of becoming a de facto standard if it solves problems. Heck, it could even become a real standard like IEEE-488 (just to name one) at some point if it gets submitted to a standards organization.
