I dont know how many people still have this thread bookmarked but I thought some might be interested in this information....I originally posted it over on the Yahoo LWIN thread.

PCS/LWIN Comparision...

Sprint PCS

- 16,800 Basestations with 191 million covered POP's This works out to 11,369 covered POP's per basestation.

Leap

- 1,562 Basestations with 19.5 million covered POP's. This works out to 12,483 covered POP's per basestation.

I dont know of any other wireless companies that release this information.

I am still trying to figure out the implications of this information. However, it seems to me that one of the fundamental pillars behind LWIN's business model is that they are able to lower infrastructure costs by not having basestations in areas that are not densely populated (highways in particular). Thus far PCS has been able to almost match LWIN in terms of efficiency per basestation. My guess is that PCS's number will go down as they improve coverage without significantly increasing the number of POP's....but this could be equally true of LWIN.

One other interesting tidbit....PCS has 26,000 carriers on air. This works out to 1.55 carriers per basestation or about 3.87MHz. They have a penetration rate of 6.5%. I really dont think they are worried about additional spectrum anytime soon....
