Hi August,

I used to do pottery... more sculptural and not too much working on a wheel. I've been thinking of getting back into it again... perhaps in the springtime. Trouble is, I would really need to get a kiln as I'm pretty far out in the sticks and don't like driving anywhere that remotely resembles a peopled-place... (o:

Anyhow, I'm interested in any thoughts on kilns... what kind to look for. I collect pottery..generally very large bowls, pitchers and unusual pots, urns, etc... and when I'm visiting studios, I often check out the kilns and have seen all types ranging from electric with those large "rings" that you can add to enlarge the height of the kiln, to fairly large homemade kilns... refrigerator- or larger-sized chambers fired by propane. I'm thinking that I would probably do larger pieces... sculpture or hand-formed bowls... large pieces to go out in a garden, etc... so the type of kiln that I need is definitely going to have to be on the large size.

Anyhow, that's a beginning post for your thread. I'm interested in hearing any opinions on kilns, fuel, etc... And I'd be particularly interested in hearing anything about kiln construction and fuel-firing systems.
