Based on my experience with management, failure is a good thing. It means you're willing to take risks.
Of course, being an idiot isn't really a viable way to look at it. If you've been successful enough to reach the top, you must have something going for you. At least that's what my wife keeps telling me.

I'm a believer that getting to the top is easy if you're an asshole who doesn't mind pissing people off. Even if you're an utter failure, you could do it (Chainsaw Al comes to mind...I never consider his "successes" to be legit).
