This could be positive or negative for INSP, depending on who merges with whom.... MOBILE MERGERS COULD BE ON HORIZON The Federal Communications Commission's expected relaxation of rules restricting wireless spectrum ownership could set the stage for a wave of U.S. wireless mergers. Currently, companies are prohibited from owning any more than 45MHz of wireless spectrum in any city, with rural limits set at 55MHz. Big carriers in other countries typically face limits of 80MHz, putting U.S. companies at significant disadvantage as they attempt to grow their markets. FCC Chairman Michael Powell is expected today to raise the U.S. limits by an initial 10MHz to 20MHz, with the ownership restriction to be phased out altogether in the next few years. The elimination would open the way for large-scale mergers, most likely based around technological compatibility. Cingular and AT&T are in the process of converting their TDMA networks to the GSM standard, which is already used by Deutsche Telekom's VoiceStream. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS use the rival CDMA standard, and likely will soon be joined by Nextel, which will migrate from the standard it's currently using.
