I would suggest you look at defenselink.mil

This is a movie, It's 5 meg and it shows night vision of
Two armored vehicles. I saw it played on TV and you could also see the men moving around the truck. In Vietnam there was nothing like this. Also most of where the Taliban hide I believe is at very high elevations and natural cover is almost non existent except for digging holes.
This means that out of the blue, death rains down and over time the attrition will decimate all motivation.

Do you know that when a truck on a man does anything to disturb a natural place, that many not in visible light but in other frequencies that the mechanical disturbance can be seen. It take time, but again, no-one is supplying food or replacement ammunition or weapons or people. The taliban is a dictatorship and I don't think there are that many (several thousand) who are really serious.

Any comparison to the Viet Cong is totally bogus in my opinion. Vietnam was all jungle and deep natural cover. Vietnam had China and Russia providing arms and advisors and Vietnam was surrounded by countries where the Viet Cong could escape. Vietnam was a ribbon and Afghanistan is barren thousands of square miles.

I would not be surprised if the real cleanup waited for spring, but I see this as not simple, but straightforward.

Your analysis of virtual reality rehearsal and paper trading is a poor comparison. In many attack situation with virtual reality rehearsal, the attacker not only has the element of surprise, the attacker will also have a far better spacial appreciation of the lay of the land. A person who can view the layout in virtual 3D space will have a better understanding than those who only see it from the walking view.

Yes there is the unexpected, but that attackers also have overwhelming firepower and have good intel on the exact location of the bad guys. You also have to understand the communication about who and what is where keeps the attacker informed and able to exploit continuous surprise.
