There is no doubt that Microsoft is an incredible clever organization that has done much innovation in software license designs. They have been incredibly good at marketing software and deserve to earn good money on that. There are many companies that work or try to work like Microsoft, they just haven't got the same growth or size yet.

The problem with Microsoft is that Windows 95 and Word 6 were the ultimately best products they ever made (relative to when they made them) - since then the extra value in newer versions haven't matched the price. Programming tools evolve all the time and programmer productivity rises. The explosive growth of Linux software shows this very clearly, and it's not that big a deal to make a basic word processor for ordinary use, today.

Microsoft isn't able to gain enough growth just by releasing new software and renewing existing software, they need mechanisms that also make existing customers buy this software. These mechanisms include:

- Tight integration.
- Embrance and extend.
- FUD.
- Shutting out competitors.
- Weird licenses. Like the frontpage license that censors the contens of the webpages you produce.

It is a shame and an international image problem for Americans to have a company like that. If Microsoft walks free after this huge trial with false videos etc., it's an even bigger shame on the American people. I don't understand why noone from Microsoft has been jailed yet, but then again I don't want to discuss a justice system I don't understand.

Lars.
