Been thinking about strategy in Afghanistan. Why not pick a relatively out of the way, sparsely populated area and just build a base? Perhaps even during winter, when the locals are reputed to prefer hibernation over fighting?

It would seem creating a base of operations in an isolated area would minimize the problems with local guerilla activity while removing to some extent our dependence on foreign powers for airspace transit rights.
