Why not pick a relatively out of the way, sparsely populated area and just build a base?

Several times I have come close to making an "analysis" of the Afghan situation. Trouble is I am not a military person, and have no ability in politics. I would just be another dumb numnut sounding off. However, as a fellow person trying to comprehend, maybe I can play the amature armchair "expert" (I have a very low opinion of experts in business btw) and put up what's called a "strawman". i.e. a model to be criticised and improved upon.

First the main problem. If 6 million Afghans starve to death this winter, the USA and Allies lose all sorts of justification for the war. So what, 6k wealthy USA citizens lose thier lives in 911 and it is remotely possible that OBL is responsible, thus 6 million Afghans lose their lives slowely through starvation and disease... well the moral war is lost to the muslim fundemental nutballs.

So... The USA and Allies must feed the Afghans. Trouble is..no way do you want to feed the Taliban or OBL or his buddies. The logistics are most important here. A successful raid or two by OBL and buddies on a USA land base would make this war in Afghanistan another Russian experience. Worst case scenario mind you.

OBL and buddies are best blasted while low on food and ammo imho.

Think about it. It's a war of logistics. Keep the Afghans alive while kill the Taliban and OBL. Logistics at 15 to 20 k feet up the mountains in winter is the issue.
