Sam, I have had no problem with the return path in particular.

The fact that the return path is vulnarable to interference is the reason why the modems use a lower speed on the return path. (e.g. has nothing to do with optical cable capacity.) Some cable modems use the same speed on the uplink as on the downlink, and they are more susceptable.

The Motorola BitSurfr uses a lower speed and a more robust modulation method on the return path. My understanding is that the reliability of each path is roughly the same.
