I remember with some regret, another gold bug running down one of my favorite investments here on SI, UNPH, later known as JDSU. The year? 1996-7? Yup, here she was shorting one of the king-kong stocks of the decade, early in it's run, mumbling official sounding mumbo jumbo about shelf offerings and the such. I still wonder what she did to protect her office furniture, especially on those unexpected +16% days (oops!). Good thing that Au has been such a steady winner, makes up for little "oops!" like JDSU. Ah, I remember her handle now, old_49er. She sounded so erudite at the time. It must be the climate over east of the Cascades. Those cold snaps must clarify the thought processes.
Anyway, dumb ole me. First into the suppliers, and now into the railroads, now that the road is laid. It's funny, now some people still think that rail and spikes are stellar investments, while railcars are "reported" sitting on the siding by the millions. (Oh, but try to ship something these days...T1's are running $1000/mo. still.) Darn if I can figure out why.
Edit, darn, I didn't know this before hand, believe me, but I did a search on old_49er, and tarnation, lookee what came up. Hit paydirt, I think. Message 16320808 |
