Unless a "recount" changes the vote, Paul will be gone soon. I would like to propose some additional rules to make this a better thread. I have sent similar suggestions to Mani and I ask that he would call for a vote on my proposal. The original post would now become: --------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a thread for thoughts and news concerning AMD and overall semiconductor industry. It is intended to help the participants get relevant info on AMD in order to maximize profits.
The rules are simple. No off topic post, no insults, personal attacks, name calling, or too-frequent posting. You MUST be courteous to others. Everyone is welcomed.
The following actions will be considered automatic violations. If anyone notices a violation, send a PM to Mani by clicking his name on the original or another of his posts. The violator will be automatically banned for two weeks if the moderator confirms the violation.
1. No more than 25 posts in six hours or 40 posts in 24 hours by one individual.
2. Making an identical or almost-identical post to someone, or, publicly complaining about the thread moderator, more than two times within a week.
3. Using a derogatory name, such as "Athwiper" or "Itanic" or "Cherry Sanders" more than 2 times within a week. This would apply to products, individuals or groups. The names AMDroids, AMDites, Intelopers, Intelitubbies and similar are allowed to refer to pro-AMD and pro-Intel camps.
4. Repeating a link or long quotation a total of 3 or more times if someone has already complained about it.
5. Any obvious insult, personal attack or name-calling against another poster or any obviously offensive post. (IOW, the limit for this remains at ZERO, but the moderator has the final say.) The offensive post need not be made directly to the person who is attacked.
ENFORCEMENT - Send a PM to the thread moderator. If the moderator verifes the infraction, the guilty party will be banned for two weeks without a vote. The moderator always has the power to ban someone for two weeks without a vote for any of the above infractions, even if no one else has complained about it.
REPEAT VIOLATIONS - The penalty will remain at two weeks unless at least five individuals PM the thread moderator within a period of two weeks and ask for a one month (2nd offense) or longer (3rd offense) ban. The longer ban will be carried out if the thread votes in the majority within the time period set by the moderator.
Use the PM (private message) feature of SI to contact the thread moderator by clicking on his name ------------------------------------------------------------
Comments -
1. Most people would agree that some people simply post way too much on this thread. A limit of 25 in six hours or 40 a day is actually much more than some others proposed to me, but several people over the past few days routinely exceeded this limit, so I think occasional two week bans would quickly "retrain" them to reduce the noise level.
2-4. I'm sick and tired of derogatory names like Athwiper. If someone comes up with a cute funny parody of a name, they are free to use it once in a while, but not more than twice a week. 2 and 4 fall in the category I call "badgering," and it shouldn't be tolerated.
5. This rule is just a re-affirmation of the existing rules, with the possible addition of 3rd party name-calling. (Example: I tell albert that Tench is a #%@$!, rather than posting to him directly.)
Some suggested that we just eliminate voting and give Mani the discretion to ban for a week or two. Rule #5 basically gives him this power. We won't have to vote on two week suspensions.
It would be nice if rule #1 could be enforced automatically, but, for now, it will be necessary for the thread to police itself and PM Mani with violations.
Of course, Mani would have to agree with these changes. In the long run, it should reduce the workload because 1) Detection of abuses is done by the thread 2) Less voting by the thread is necessary However, there may initially be more frequent short suspensions because we are not used to limiting our posts.
If Mani agrees, I would like to call for a vote on the change within a week.
