Beamer - Re: "What happened to their previous estimation of 140mm2?"

I haven't a clue.

What "may" have happened, is that AMD actually obtained a Northwood Engineering sample (I'm sure a "close customer" to both AMD and Intel would provide such) and they decapped the package and did a measurement.

I doubt that AMD would publicly post the Northwood die size unless they REALLY knew.

If that 116 sq. mm. number is true, it is a MAJOR technological tour de force for Intel and their 0.13 micron process - doubling the L2 cache size while reducing the die size from 217 sq. mm (0.18 micron) to 116 sq. mm. (0.13 micron).

Also, this could go a LONG WAY to explain the long, sour faces and subdued energy of the AMD folks on that analyst call yesterday.

AMD probably feels like they are stuck on a railroad track with the Intel Engine bearing down on them.
