USB was an excellent replacement for Serial and Parallel ports. (It doesn't quite do it for high-bandwidth accessories or as a replacement for the PS/2 mouse connector¹, though).

It's significantly cheaper, faster, easier to use and more versatile (e.g. hot-plug-able).

¹ USB Latency is slightly higher and Rate is lower compared to PS/2 using a utility such as the venerable PS2Rate. By "Rate" I mean the refresh rate (or transfers per second), which along with latency determine the "responsiveness".
