RE: <Thought is controlled for everyone here. The thought police have spoken....>

Elmer,

Enough with the thought control stuff already, I realize I am weighing in late on this and I didn't vote one way or the other but I have been giving it some thought and despite the fact that I have mixed feelings on the issue I know two things for sure...

1) The issue is not whether we want a moderator and a moderated thread, it is who we want to moderate it and how it will be moderated

2) Paul practices thought control much more often and more effectively than this threads actual moderation ever does

The reason I think this is that although Paul may not have the unilateral banning power of a dejure moderator he sets himself up as the moderator defacto by sitting back and waiting until he sees a post, or comment, or idea that he does not like and then all he needs to do is insert a few 'athwipe' references, foul language, personal jibes, repeat them until nerves are raw and soon the thread is flooded with petty responses, baiting, sparring and the original idea is lost in the maelstrom. At that point he has effectively erradicated discourse on the issue he didn't like and generally lowered the value of the thread, not to mention that in so doing he most likely discouraged posts by many posters who were disgusted by the general atmosphere and so did not post the on topic opinions or ideas that they otherwise might have. This is thought control too. it is subtler but as Paul shows daily it is very effective.

So fine, if you think banning Paul is thought control that's your prerogative but I happen to think that Paul's version of thought control is much more detrimental to the thread.

PS: But as I mentioned I have mixed feelings on the issue because I agree that the better way of dealing with Paul is to either put him on ignore or simply read and not respond to his posts unless they meet a certain level of common decency. Unfortunately this would take much more maturity than many people on this thread could ever muster.
