It's ingrained in their corporate culture, Jacob. Q reached its current stature by funding a cdma network in San Diego to prove the viability of the technology, which was seriously contested by the gsm cartel. It was a bold gamble, but based on technological insights that skewed the odds slightly in their favor. Q's management continues to rely on this "edge", but at some point, most likely when Dr. J turns over control of the company to professional managers, they will have to discontinue the practice. Until then, I'll consider Dr. J's acumen to be my investing "edge".
