Some confirmation about Mazar-e-Sharif.

Taliban admits opposition forces have entered key city

Opposition forces claim they've captured the key northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

An American official confirms opposition forces entered the city and that Taliban forces are fleeing.

The Taliban confirms that opposition troops have entered southern parts of the city.

The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press says Taliban troops fleed "after heavy American bombing of their positions".

The agency says Taliban troops are assembling outside the city but gives no further details.

Opposition spokesman Ashraf Nadeem had said that troops broke through Taliban lines at the Pul-e-Imam Bukhri bridge on the southern edge of the city.

Taliban forces appeared to have abandoned the city, he said by telephone from Dar-e-Suf, about 50 miles south of Mazar-e-Sharif.

A US official at the Pentagon, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the victory, saying there is still some fighting, but "really, it's the Taliban fleeing the city in droves." He said the Taliban fighters were heading toward Kabul.

At the Pentagon, Rear Admiral Craig Quigley, a spokesman for Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, said the Pentagon had no independent knowledge of the reported breakthrough but that it would be a welcome development if true.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said there is "no doubt at all that there has been significant progress made" in the opposition Northern Alliance's campaign to take the strategically important northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif.
