can not argue with that but OTOH how much different it is from US space program. My point was just that US entered the race very late and had to play catch up game up until very recently.
Russian industrial achievements were questionable in general but the space program used be outstanding starting with work that dates back to very early years of last century, prior to Soviet Union.
In fact, as a byproduct of that research, when Germany attacked Russia some of the way outdated russian bi-planes were equipped with very sophisticated rocket systems (both air to air and air to ground).
