The dangers that you describe are those that arise from the activities of normal daily life - Westerner are not accustom to mass death caused by suicide missions such as the WTC on September eleventh.

I can not speak with authority but can summarize my understanding of the underlying rationale as follows:

The threat perceived by "Islamists" comes from Western civilization or modernization. They argue that our emphasis materialistic values, or the "good life," attacks the spiritual foundations of Islam.

As I understand it, suicide is not condoned, rather it is condemned by Islam. This underscores the distinction between what we call "Islam" and the "Islamists."

"Islamists" are really political opportunists, who seem to have perverted/inverted the "Greater and Lesser Jihads" of Mohamed. The Taliban, ben Laden, et. al. are "Islamists."

They convince followers that "Islam" is under continuous attack by evil forces -- to read Israel, the US, etc. This may seem paranoid by Western standards, nevertheless it gives followers that buy into their argument the right to use any means at their disposal to defeat the enemy -- who after all, represents the Devil.
