I disagree. Al Qaeda doesn't care about the people of Afghanistan, agreed, but they don't come from Afghanistan.

The reports about Palestinian suicide bombers suggest to me that a major motivation is the belief that their families will be materially better off as a consequence, due to the charitable contributions which are lavished on the families of suicide bombers. If so, they care about their families.

Bin Laden cares about Mecca and Medina, passionately.

The point of mutually assured destruction is finding something that the other side cares about. I believe that the other side does care about things which could be threatened.
