There are many things in Microsoft's strategies for broadband services than you thought. There is nothing free in the market unless following 2 reasons:
(1) promotion by giving away to gain the market share and then they're sale for you later when the market pick up and (2) competition (like MS-IExplorer and Netscape).

MSN (Microsoft network) is the main reason why MS involved into broadband communications. Bill Gate want to dominate in following market: financial, multimedia and internet beside the operating system & office applications which they already dominated. Broadband services is the way to open those markets for MS.

Broadband will be focused at most corporate level in the short term where MS-NT package playing a major role as you could see they are gaining the marker share and IBM (OS2) & Novell (Netware) are on the losing side the most.

How do I see the broadband will help them in the short term & long term??

Short term: MS is looking at corporate's networking to boost their NT
package and it is gainning significant in the market.
Long term : Residential & small businesses (multimedia & Internet). I believed cable modems and ADSL technology will playing a major role in their strategies. Not ISDN.

Do you ever dream someday that you can see the new movie release from your home or installing the software direct from MS server using I-browser simultanously, or even video phone on the same phone line?

Clint
