TALIBAN LIKELY TO KILL N.Y.'S JIHAD JACKASS

By AL GUART and GREG RUSSELL

November 11, 2001 -- New York-raised Muslim Muhammad Junaid could be murdered by the Taliban forces he says he is bidding to join - but risks a death sentence if he abandons his personal jihad and returns to the United States.
Intelligence sources say Taliban chiefs have become increasingly suspicious of Western-born Muslims who have rushed to the war zone in recent weeks, claiming it is their religious duty to take up arms against the United States-led allied forces.

Junaid joined a group of British Muslims who last week attempted to link with the Taliban. But experts say they are on a suicide mission.

The chance that a Westerner could be a spy is a risk Taliban warlords will not take, sources said.

"One or two extra soldiers are not worth it. These people [the Taliban] would slit an outsider's throat rather than risk compromising their cover," a source said.

Junaid, 26, boasted last week he had quit his $70,000-a-year job in New York and had bought a one-way ticket to Pakistan a week after his mother was rescued from the Twin Towers on Sept. 11.

"I will kill every American that I see in Afghanistan," Junaid said in a televised interview. "And I'll kill every American soldier I see in Pakistan."

Junaid's statements and actions could prompt charges which carry the death penalty if he sets foot on U.S. soil again, legal experts said.

"This sounds prosecutable under the Sedition Act," said former federal prosecutor Sean O'Shea. "It would call for the death penalty."

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said: "We should use every legal step we have against him."
