i think you're confusing the term ASIC vendor with the term foundry.

The terms are interchangeable.

if you take the characterized spice libraries from a foundry (or better yet, run some wafers and do your own characterization) and do a device level implementation, that's called a full-custom methodology and that can be optimized for speed very efficiently.

True but this takes lots of time.

Exactly the point except. This is not AMD's process and they're not going to tune it for Athlon. Athlon is going to have to be tuned for it instead. Now if you hadn't seen first silicon yet, just how confident would you be of imminent production and high performance?
