Hawk,
sorry i can't resist...it is veteran's day and you reminded me of a war story.
there was only one tank battle involving American tanks during the entire nam war. the tank unit involved was a platoon from B Co, 1/69 armor, 4th Inf. the date was the night of March 3-4, 1969. the place was the west hill of Ben Het Special Forces camp located at the intersection of S viet nam, cambodia and laos. the hilltop was about 25x60 yards. the camp call sign was Polo "Uncle". a small force of about 40 montagnard tribesmen, led by two American Green Berets, were in place to defend the "west" hill. the 3 tank platoon was moved up to reinforce them.
when the attack came, the enemy strength was estimated at 5000-6000 nva supported by 10 nva tanks. the small force beat the attackers off. most friendlies were wounded, two Americans died in battle....both were tank crewman.
the SF lieutenant's call sign was...
unclewest.
i spent most of the night sitting in a little trench behind the 2 bodies directing air strikes and artillery on the bad guys.
