JG, With Pynchon, the first five pages are always true art. After that, it is mostly throwaway crapola. You know, of course, that Pynchon was accused of really being Salinger for many years? I figure the reason these guys take so long to write a novel is because one dude has like seven different names. You know: Salinger, Pynchon, Roth, Bellow, Vonnegut, O'Rourke and Jackie Collins. <g>
