Scholars will differ about the "proper" exegesis of many passages in the Bible, the Qur'an, or the scriptures of other faiths. The only real problems that arise with passages which appear to sanction bloodlust and genocide is when current believers decide that they can be used to justify current atrocity. One of the hallmarks of spiritual maturity is that one doesn't attempt to excuse behavior which in other contexts would be regarded as barbaric by passing the responsibility onto God. Wisdom suggests that if errors are to be made then they should be errors of compassion, because no sacred text of any faith ever depicts God saying to a follower: "I cast you out because you loved too much".
