That depends on what you mean with do-it-yourselfers. If you mean people that would like to create a business that competes with Red Hat, you are probably right. But people who are not good programmers, should stay away from kernel.org. Instead I would recommend linux.com It doesn't choose the distribution for you - so go with Red Hat if you live in the U.S. or English language area, and SuSE if you live in a German language area. Lars.
