MAZAR-E-SHARIF (Online): The strategic city of Mazar-e-Sharif that fell to the Afghan opposition Northern Alliance three days ago was a picture of delight with radios blaring and men queuing up in front of barbershops.Mazar-e-Sharif presented a totally different picture after the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance captured the city, IANS reported on Sunday.

City residents said songs were played at high volumes throughout Saturday and even Sunday, which was banned under the Taliban's strict Islamist regime.

Another major difference was the long queues of men at barbershops to shave off their beards, also compulsory under Taliban rule.

Women, who perhaps got the worst deal under the Taliban with the militia issuing strict orders under which they were denied the right to education and asked to stay at home, were seen in markets — a rare sight during the Taliban rule.

Sources said Pashtoon were arrested by Northern Alliance forces so that they could not cause any law and order problems for city dwellers.

The Taliban confirmed it had evacuated Mazar-e-Sharif, which it termed a tactical withdrawal.
