Plane crashes in Queens borough of New York

New York is on a level one alert after a plane crashed in the Queens borough of the city.

All flights to and from New York's three airports have been suspended.

The plane, number 587, an American Airlines A300 airbus, was taking off from JFK Airport and was bound for the Dominican Republic.

The number of people aboard is not immediately known, although the plane can reportedly carry up to 360 people.

One witness reported debris falling from sky and told the Fox News Channel that four homes were on fire.

Another told CNN he was 40 blocks away and saw: "Just a lot of smoke. Tons and tons of smoke. You can see emergency vehicles heading to area.

"Lots of people are standing in the streets. It's very tense."

The plane crashed shortly after 9 am (1400 GMT). New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is reportedly heading to the airliner crash site .

The plane is believed to have crashed less than 10 miles from the airport in the Rockaways area of Queens.
