Bill, if anybody is going to successfully launch a desktop PC, marketed as an appliance, it will be a Sony or a Philips. Sony is already in the PC market as well as the PDA and set-top box markets. Both Sony and Philips got a taste of Microsoft licensing with WebTV and both have stopped manufacturing WebTV boxes.

I understand that the embedded space and the desktop PC markets are distinct now, but I expect one of the consumer giants to blur that distinction with the launch of a Linux-based PC (desktop and laptop) within a couple of years. This is something that a company like Dell or Compaq could not do successfully without building a whole new consumer market presence.

And you may be right, it's possible that they won't market the Linux brand. They may rebrand something built atop Linux, but then again, they may determine that Linux, in a year or two, is a powerful brand. By that time, if Linux continues its amazing pace of development, the name Linux may associated with ease of use and intuitive workflow.

Time will tell.
