Compaq Unveils New Evolution in Desktop PCs for Business
New Evo D500 Ultra-Slim Desktop Offers Powerful Combination of Features, Flexibility and Manageability in an Affordable Ultra-Slim Form Factor
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- During a joint Compaq, Intel and Microsoft luncheon on the evolution of the PC at Comdex Fall 2001, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) today previewed the next generation in desktop PCs for business -- the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop.
Available in early 2002, the new Evo D500 Ultra-slim desktop offers the most innovative and affordable combination of features, flexibility, and manageability. It is the first desktop to feature integrated wireless connectivity through Compaq's ingenious MultiPort technology. Weighing just over 11 pounds and 75 percent smaller than the average desktop PC, the new desktop will support Intel® Celeron(TM) and Pentium® 4 processors in its slim 2.72-inch thin and just over one foot square package.

Evolutionary Design
Designed for increased usability and accessibility, the dynamic new Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop is designed to fit within the parameters of a monitor base, taking efficient advantage of otherwise wasted space on the desktop. The slim design maximizes flexibility, keeping the monitor at a comfortable eye-level in a standard desktop configuration, and minimizes required space when positioned as a slim tower.
To improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and all users, the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop offers front and rear audio and Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectivity, and has been tested with industry-leading Assistive Technology products and supports the accessibility features integrated into Microsoft Windows XP.
An additional ergonomic advantage designed into the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop is its remarkably quiet operation. Compaq engineers were able to dramatically reduce acoustics through the use of low-noise fans, high efficiency heat sinks and quiet hard drives. The result is a less than 28 dB sound level, which is more than 50 percent quieter than previous generation desktops.
Innovative Flexibility and Manageability
Designed to both meet the IT needs of today and evolve with the standards of tomorrow, the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop incorporates Compaq's innovative MultiPort wireless technology. Multiport is a modular wireless solution that provides users wireless connectivity through an integrated, plug-and-play USB port integral to the module's location on the slim edge of the desktop. MultiPort modules integrate the radio and antenna into a single assembly, which then inserts and fits flush against the side of the unit for a clean solution with no external antenna or dongle vulnerable to breakage.
This flexible solution enables users to connect to multiple wireless standards by simply changing the wireless module. In addition, as MultiPort is based on industry-standard USB technology, it allows for easy development of future MultiPort modules and providing customers a means to migrate to future wireless standards as they become available. This enables the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop to evolve as technologies change or mature, thereby extending the life of the PC.
Another feature that makes the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop so flexible is the incorporation of MultiBay. This bay allows hot swapping between a floppy disk, CD-ROM, CD-RW or DVD, and is also designed to accept evolving storage mediums.
As both MultiPort and MultiBay modules are utilized with Compaq Evo notebooks, customers deploying both the new Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop and Evo notebooks can realize additional cost savings through shared modules, and simplified IT management with fewer pieces of equipment.
To further simplify IT management, the new Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop will be available standard in a legacy-free configuration, but also have the flexibility to add an optional snap-on legacy module (with serial, parallel and PS/2 ports). This enables the unit to be easily adapted to the specific needs of the user. Reduced legacy dependency means lower acquisition costs, fewer software and hardware conflicts, fewer pieces to manage and lower support costs throughout the lifecycle of the PC.
As with all Compaq Evo D500 Desktop PCs for business users, Compaq ensures long, 12-month lifecycles as well as the ability to share a common software image across other D500 series form factors with the same chipset. Having a consistent, stable platform means the Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop can be integrated at the customer's own pace without having to qualify and test the image each time a new unit is purchased.
The Evo D500 Ultra-slim Desktop will also include Compaq's Intelligent Manageability tools for simplified PC management and increased stability, both of which contribute to a lowered total cost of ownership across the life of the PC.
