One interesting fact in the plane crash is that parts of the air plane are scattered over a large area including in Jamaica Bay this is not consistent with mechanical failure as far as I know.

The spin is in full force to attribute the crash to mechanical failure. What I do not get is if an engine fails why is the tail several miles away.

According to firefighters on the scene, one of the plane's
engines fell into a boat in the backyard of a three-story
Queen Anne-style home on Beach 129th Street. The fire
from that crash spread to several nearby homes. Another
engine fell at a gas station, narrowly missing the station's
gas tanks. The owner of the station and one of his workers
put out the fire, the mayor said.

The bulk of the plane crashed a few blocks away at Beach
131st Street, fire officials said. That blaze had been
declared a five-alarm fire with some 198 firefighters and
44 fire trucks on the scene. Late this afternoon Mr.
Giuliani said 12 houses were affected by the crash. Of
those, four homes were destroyed by the fire, and four
others were seriously damaged. Part of the aircraft's wing
fell into Jamaica Bay, the mayor said.
