The emotional toll they take on people is an emotional toll- not a logical one, or a physical one. What dies most painfully are the dreams of the baby, especially in early trimester miscarriages. Psychological pain is still psychological pain- but to set public policy by it, when there are great countermanding forces, seems strange.

As for late trimester abortions (a rarity, and usually performed when the fetus is grossly deformed- and who could wish to force THAT kind of psychological pain on a mother?) they are not common enough that Karen was probably even addressing those. Most people think about the much more common early trimester abortions.
