My thanks to all for your replies to my questions on memory management issues. I'm still digesting information from here and a few other replies elsewhere. I installed the memory test software from alraz's link, and let some of it run with no problems detected. It seems to work better once the machine has warmed up a bit, but there is a question wether my motherboard really can handle more than 384MB. I hear there are two different ABIT BH6 boards, one of which really has a 384M limit. I still need to track that down.
I tried running Cacheman, with limited success (and limited understanding; I still need to dig into the manual) I run a program called PalTalk that seems to be a resource eater in Windows 98, with no visible affect on memory allocation and use. I tried running the memory recovery routine from Cacheman, but it did not help. When it runs, it allocates a whole bunch of memory and then releases it, but his does not free up resources. It also disrupts one of my market data programs I run causing it to download a bunch of data before it is useable again. The only solution seems to be to not run PalTalk, or reboot several times during the day.
