Lumenon Secures Patent

Optical-device maker Lumenon Innovative Lightwave Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:LUMM) said it has been awarded its first patent from the U.S. Patent Office.

Patent Number 6,309,803 for the method of "on-substrate cleaving of sol-gel waveguide," which has been assigned to the company, was issued on October 30, 2001.

Mark Andrews, co-founder, vice president of technology and chief technology officer (CTO) of Lumenon, said in a statement, "We have an outstanding staff that understands that photonics is all about innovation. We are pleased to have achieved this milestone. Lumenon intends to capture its innovations across all of its activities and to leverage its proprietary intellectual property. This is the start of what we believe will become a great portfolio of IP assets as our company goes forward."

Lumenon designs, develops and builds optical components and integrated optical devices in the form of packaged compact hybrid glass and polymer circuits on silicon chips. These photonic devices, based upon Lumenon's patented PHASIC design process and manufacturing methodology, offer communications providers the ability to dramatically boost bandwidth for today's burgeoning telecommunication, data communication and cable industries.
