Intel Looks to Cosmos to Drive P4 Sales

By Tom Murphy -- Electronic News, 11/12/2001

As consumers hunker down to weather the economic downturn of 2001, Intel Corp. is enlisting the help of extraterrestrials to try and lure more buyers for its 2GHz Pentium 4 processors.

While brokerage companies such as Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs have been surprised by strong orders for MPUs in October, there is still a concern about the PC sell-through during the fourth quarter, which is traditionally the strongest period of the year. Even Intel, in its last quarterly earnings call, said it expects flat revenues for the fourth quarter.

Intel’s latest ad campaign featuring animation from PDI/Dreamworks introduces consumers to a range of applications that can take advantage of the company’s Pentium 4 processors.
During the downturn, Intel has been ratcheting up the clock speeds of its processors more and more, but many consumers seem to be hoarding their cash as they go through layoffs and the uncertainty brought about by the events of Sept. 11. While many consumers and businesses believe the machines they purchased for the Y2K update are adequate for their needs right now, the industry's largest chipmaker has the daunting task of convincing both parties that they need even more performance.
