Singapore shares slide as SIA and CapitaLand dive

sg.news.yahoo.com

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares opened lower on Tuesday as the crash of a passenger plane in New York stoked fears of more attacks like those of September 11 on the United States, unnerving investors.

Singapore Airlines (SIA), which had gained more than 13 percent in the past two days, plunged 5.85 percent to S$8.85 on fears the crash could cause renewed turmoil in the airline industry. Federal officials said early evidence suggested the crash was an accident and not the result of sabotage.

CapitaLand Ltd tumbled 9.03 percent to S$1.31 after cancelling its S$740 million (US$406 million) initial public offering for a property trust. Trade in CapitaLand shares resumed after being suspended for most of Monday pending the announcement on the shelved launch of the trust.

At 0112 GMT, the benchmark Straits Times Index was down 0.65 percent or 8.86 points at 1,361.46. Losers beat gainers 46 to 7 with volume brisk at 15 million shares
