I don't think it was ever his [Greenspan's]intention to inflict pain on his nation. I'm sure it wasn't, but I don't think anyone ever figured out why he was pumping up interest rates when there were no indications that inflation was any threat. It appears again that that seemingly hopeless Northern Ireland quagmire might actually get resolved. Maybe somehow the same might be achieved for the Middle East. Maybe. Maybe. I don't sense that this is the right Administration for it though. IMO, intractable conflicts need an external stimulation to get going in the right direction. And that external stimulation needs to appear to be unbiased. US policies in the region have always been pro-Israel to varying degrees and continue to be so. Arafat should resign and spend the rest of his years enjoying the sunrises and sunsets over someplace like the Maldives. jttmab
