Paul, Tony, Thread,
There is an article in today's WSJ (I get the hard copy, if anyone can cut and paste from the on line edition that would be great), titled "IBM to Sell Servers Using Intel's Foster, Starting Next Month".
In essence, the article states that IBM is getting a jump on other OEM's. That they will be "marketing it's new servers, code named Summit, as alternatives to mainframe computers". "The first time IBM has attempted to market Intel-based systems as major computers for corporate data centers... (to) compete with their own mainframes". IBM is "making an aggressive attempt to push mainframe design into the Intel world". "John V. Nelson, CTO for Cap Gemeni Ernst & Young says he plans to install Summit servers in all the companies development centers. "These are very, very important announcements for customers who want to consolidate small Intel servers for used for managing e-mail or printing into a single larger server to save money and floor space, he said".
The article says that Foster wasn't due till the first half of next year. I'm not sure how much of this is new news, but it is a very positive article.
