Stan,
Thanks much for the news flow. The political news in Afghanistan is great as well. There are reports this morning that the Taliban is leaving Khandahar in the south as well. What may have happened is that a "pragmatic" bin Laden has pulled the plug in an attempt to get his core Arab fighter either to the mountains in order to launch a guerilla war later on or out of the country altogether to save them for another day. Hopefully the US will hit the retreating Taliban/arab fighters unmercifully over the next several days.
It was heartening to hear of Afghan children flying kites today and the line up at the barber as men shave off their mandated beards. Hopefully the Northern Alliance leaders can get their folks under control so there are no more atrocities to report. Taliban have it all coming to them though and hopefully bin Laden will be next. The unity of purpose between countries as disparate as the US, Iran, Turkey talks to a better world rising out of this.
Key thing that must happen to make this so is an enforceable, peace with recognition of Israel and an end of settlements in the middle east between Israel and Palestine that not only has the blessing of the Arab states but of Iran as well. Iran is a key player in this region again and we should do everything we can to involve them and to encourage the triumph of the democratic elements within Iran. This is much more likely than it was on 9/10/01. mike
