Loks like the potential buyers of NXCD are starting to come out of the shadows. This is the first time I have seen anything other than a rumour.

"We are taking a look at NextCard," David Wesselink, a vice chairman at Metris, said Wednesday at the U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray Financial Services Conference.

Mr. Wesselink said Metris, which specializes in subprime lending, is "taking a wait-and-see attitude toward Providian" but he would not rule out a bid for the company.

NextCard far more saleable here than Providian.

NextCard is very attractive in its online niche and technology. Clearly the venue of the future.

The strategic benefit to the acquisitor in this regard can not be ignored. While any possible problem is minimized by the small size.

Buying Providian here is strictly portfolio acquisition. One that is very unclear at the moment. A mistake here and the indigestion could prove fatal to the swallower.

Mr. Wesselink's statement clearly echoes the above analysis.
