A former American Airlines pilot on MSNBC or CNBC (I think) last night speculated -- and he said it was just speculation at that point, but that it has happened -- that one engine might have suddenly reversed thrust, and maybe that caused a enough violent twisting of the plane to break off the vertical stabilizer.
